We made a fermentation box out of an old esky.

Fermentation box made out of an old esky

We drilled a hole in the lid of an old esky and this means we can monitor the temperature at a glance.

small heat mat for fermentation
By: on 16 July 2024
A great little item to have in the kitchen to keep my kombucha warm. I bought a second one to keep my kefir warm during this cold spell. I like that you can set the temperature quite low, so that there's just a teensy warmth. I've had one for a couple of years and only use it intermittently, but decided I like it enough to buy another one.

Bought it to make a proofing box for bread, and it's perfect. Works exactly as advertised. Arrived a day early which was a bonus

I use them for boosting my sour dough starter and for kafir. Works really well. Have used them to kick along bread proofing. Temp setting would be handy

Green Living Australia Response
The mat is essentially just a simple heater element. To have an automatic temperature control would require a temperature sensor placed in whatever you are trying to heat and a thermostat. This would increase the price considerably.

Love this heating mat. Slim enough to heat my kefir bottles and jar and so does not take up too much space in the kitchen. Does a great job on these cold winter days. My kefir is nice and healthy thanks to the mat. Green living is a fabulous reliable company and I am a long term repeat customer.

Good simple heater for my Kombucha jar
By: on 2 July 2023
Use this heater on my bench top to sit my 3L Kombucha jar on during these colder months. For the first 2 days of each new brew batch I wind the temp control to max but from day 2 onwards I wind the temp control back about half way where it stays for the next 4-5 days. I then remove approx 2L of the fermented brew into bottles (into fridge) and add 2L of new tea mix into the fermentation jar with the remaining mother brew and SCOBY. The heater has been a good means to warming/keeping warm my Kombucha fermenting happily along during the Brisbane winter months.
